If you are a lover of PlayStation 3 video games like I am, then you have many reasons to be happy in the coming months. Video game companies release some of their biggest and most anticipated hits in March and April and 2009 is no different.
One of the biggest and most hyped titles coming out is Capcom’s “Resident Evil 5,” which is slated for release on March 13. Taking place in a sweaty desert locale with shantytowns and run-down buildings, “Resident Evil 5” is the first in the survival-horror series to be released on a next-generation console and fans of the series have much to be pumped about. The graphics are sharp and beautifully rendered and like “Resident Evil 4,” the gamer will be fighting hordes of angry villagers hell-bent on your destruction.
The main protagonist of the game is Chris Redfield, who fans may remember from the first “Resident Evil” game, as well as “Resident Evil: Code Veronica.” He is joined by hand-to-hand combat expert Sheva Alomar, who fights by Redfield’s side for much of the game. Players can even play cooperatively with one controlling Redfield and one controlling Alomar, bringing a cool feature to a series that hasn’t yet afforded co-op play. The demo of the game is available now for free at the PlayStation Store on the PS Network.
On the musical/rhythm game front, Activision’s much anticipated “Guitar Hero: Metallica,” will finally give fans of the heavy metal band the chance to take the stage and rock out with one of the most prolific groups of all time. With a release date slated for March 29, the game features 28 of the rockers biggest tunes, including “Enter Sandman,” “Master of Puppets,” and “Fade to Black.” Aerosmith was featured in their own “Guitar Hero” game a while back, but the Metallica version will likely attract a much bigger audience. As an added bonus several songs by other artists such as Alice In Chains, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Social Distortion are also included in the game, giving it even more replay value. Due to a more specialized demographic, the game probably won’t have as much success as “Guitar Hero: World Tour” did, but it will give fans of the “Guitar Hero” franchise something to play in the meantime before the next iteration of the series is released.
Usually, games based on movie franchises tend to be passable, but sometimes a few outstanding ones come about. “The Godfather II,” the sequel to the 2006 Electronic Arts sleeper hit “The Godfather,” was slated to be released at the end of February but has now been delayed to a second quarter 2009 release. The first game was similar to “Grand Theft Auto” — an open-world sandbox version of the popular mafia film series, where players took on the role of a new recruit to the Corleone family and worked their way up. It was an extremely fun game and the sequel will allow players to expand their crew and take over parts of 1960s Florida, Cuba and New York.
One final game that definitely deserves mention here is Eidos Interactive’s “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” which is also set to be released in the second quarter of 2009. Little is known about the title but some impressive screenshots have been posted across the Internet and the Dark Knight looks incredible in his tights and spandex. The game also features The Joker as one of the villains, but other surprising enemies are in store as Arkham is where most of the Caped Crusader’s captured felons and super villains went to rot for the rest of their days.
