America, you did it. You saw past the skin color and crazy McCain ladies and managed to vote for the very first black president in history. It’s about time!
For some reason, you made a big deal about it at first. “Will I be ready for a black president? Will I be ready for a woman president? Will I be ready for Sarah Palin?” For many of your questions, you responded internally, “Umm, duh.” For others, you said, “I don’t necessarily agree with the sport of moose hunting.”
At times, you scared me America. Four years ago, you elected someone who will go in the books as the worst president in the history of the United States. It was as though you’d started this masochistic relationship with a man you thought you could change. But the results were devastating: a war, a bad economy, finger pointing, souls crumbling, Satan laughing and your sons and daughters crying.
But we can forgive you America because Tuesday night — you made change. Tuesday night, the night I wrote this humble little column, you chose wisely and elected Barack Obama as your new leader.
And you can’t get fooled again, America. You cannot afford to be fooled. Obama has been given a very tough job. There are a lot of expectations of him from you. You’re still tense and worried, but relax, America. Obama is not trying to fool you. In fact, he is being truthful with you.
He’s laying it down for you. He’s saying he is going to try his best, but you must remember, America, your last relationship left you broken hearted and depressed. So give him a chance. He is, after all, bringing you hope.
When I was little, my dad used to gently pull me by the ear when I did some misbehaving. In a pretend angry voice, he would tell me I had done something wrong. I think you might need to do that with your daughter, California. She still believes that not all humans deserve the right to marry. Unite your other states and federally legalize gay marriage.
You’ve taken a huge step forward by choosing Obama as your president, but we still have some paths to clear to give full equality to all of your sons and daughters. Or whatever.
