Senate turns down amendment on first reading

A bylaw amendment that would ban Associated Students, Inc. staff members from serving as elected officials failed to pass at Wednesday’s ASI Senate meeting.

The amendment aimed to disallow employees of the ASI, University Student Union and Child Development Center to serve as representatives on the ASI Senate, USU Board of Trustees and the Judiciary, citing a conflict of interest.

Employees of the future Student Recreation and Wellness Center would also have been barred, meaning that a total of 400 staff members throughout all four workplaces would be banned from serving on the three governmental boards.

In introducing the idea to the senate, ASI Executive Director Richard Haller said the amendment would ask employees “whether you can truly put the interests of the corporation above your own personal interests” and if “serving as an employee of a corporation compromise you ability to serve the students.”

ASI Vice President Lucy Montano expressed her disappointment at the failing of the amendment in only its first reading.
