Professional dancers to hold seminar on campus

Carrie Ann Inaba will be the keynote speaker at the Masters of Dance Seminar, which will be held May 10 at The Pointe in the Walter Pyramid.

Land-leaps, perfect pirouettes, sharpened chasses ? learn from the professionals and dance until you drop at the Masters of Dance Seminar (MODS) offered by Cal State Long Beach’s University College and Extension Services on May 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in The Pointe, a conference and event venue located in the Walter Pyramid.

The MODS is offering dancers and students a day of workshops taught by instructors who have worked with prominent names such as Janet Jackson, Cher and Madonna. Dancers will have the opportunity to be inspired and learn from the likes of Aaron Cash (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “Nip/Tuck”), Adesola Osahalumi (“Across the Universe” and “Idlewild”), Kelly Connolly (“Bolden!”), Charles “Bubba” Carr (“So You Think You Can Dance”), Artem Chigvintsev (“The O.C.”), Nathan Prevost (“Be Cool”) and Carlton Wilborn (“Move”).

Carrie Ann Inaba is the keynote speaker for MODS. You may recognize her from her role as judge on ABC’s popular hit show, “Dancing with the Stars.” She has also choreographed for other TV shows such as “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent.” Inaba has experience in a variety of entertainment, including directing, writing and editing digital documentaries and films with her company EnterMediArts Inc. She will inspire students and performers on how to make it professionally in the competitive environment they are thrust into.

Dancers will learn a variety of dance genres including modern, jazz, tap, lyrical, broadway, Latin ballroom, ballet and hip-hop. The seminar is a great way for dancers to improve their repertoire, hone their techniques, learn tips, be seen by professionals and share their love of dance with others.

Dancers of all ages and abilities are encouraged and welcome to participate in MODS. The seminar divides dancers into workshops according to their age and dance ability, which allows them to feel more comfortable by learning techniques and routines by their own different skills and talent. Each class is one hour long and will follow each other back to back. Dancers are encouraged to attend each class in order to expand their knowledge in the structure and forms of diverse dance genres.

At the end of the day, two student will be recognized with the Carrie Ann Inaba Scholarship, which includes $500 and $1,000 dance training scholarships. Students can apply for the awards by downloading the application at MODS website, modsuniversity.com. Registration for the seminar begins now and more information can be found on the website. The seminar costs $149 for non-students and $50 for CSULB students with promotional code: MODS-DANCE.
