Sharks and stingrays need some lovin’, too

The shark exhibit is one of the popular attractions at The Aquarium of the Pacific.

For some free fun on a Friday evening, flip your fins over to the Shark Lagoon Nights at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.

Open for people of all ages, guests are allowed to get personal with the majestic predators of the Pacific Ocean. The main attraction at the exhibit is the touch tank, in which guests are allowed to pet various species of stingrays and small bamboo sharks.

Children squirm and giggle while attempting to touch a finger to the large and slippery black stingray floating along the bottom of the tank, while smaller rays gracefully cruise by spectators. At the viewing tank, a huge sand tiger shark flashes a grim smile to onlookers amazed at his size.

“The Shark Lagoon was fun and interesting,” says Jeffrey Spafford, 23, a senior journalism major, “and the best part is that it was free.”

Walking distance from restaurants and pubs at The Pike shopping center, the Shark Lagoon exhibit appeals to its older crowd by offering wine, beer, coffee and deserts. Although, it is not advised to visit the exhibit inebriated.

If merely touching the slimy tough critters isn’t enough for you, an aquarium official educates the guests on the different species on display while entertaining children, and answering any questions regarding the various sea creatures as well.

The Shark Lagoon Nights are a great way to spend a Friday evening while saving money and enjoying the beautiful inhabitants of the deep.

Open to the public every Friday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the exhibit offers family fun while also appealing to an older crowd. Bring along your date, and make a splash at the Shark Lagoon Nights at the Aquarium of the Pacific.
