Men’s basketball pulls itself out of last place in Big West

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team entered The Walter Pyramid Wednesday night as the last-place team in the Big West Conference but walked out of Bakersfield Saturday night as the seventh-place team.

The 49ers (6-18, 3-8) had four players in double-figures on Saturday night, but were edged by the Roadrunners 77-71 in a non-conference game at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Junior guard Donovan Morris matched his career-high and scored 17 of his 32 points in the first half. He finished the game shooting efficient 11-18 from the field and added eight rebounds.

On Wednesday night, freshman guard Greg Plater came off the bench to drain a career-high six 3-pointers and help lead the 49ers to a 56-46 win over UCR at The Walter Pyramid.

LBSU held the Highlanders to just 16 first-half points and avenged a 70-66 loss at Riverside on Jan. 19. UCR’s 46 points were the lowest output by a LBSU opponent this season.
