The first of three candidates for Cal State Long Beach’s vice president of administration and finance answered questions in an open forum Thursday afternoon in the University Library’s Karl W. E. Anatol Center.
F. Stephen Malott responded to the audience inquiries from labor relations and disaster responses to his compensation philosophy and what his plans are if he were hired as the new vice chancellor. Malott is currently the vice chancellor for administrative services at the University of Missouri, Rolla.
When the topic of Malott’s compensation philosophy arose, Malott spoke primarily of his personal ideas on the subject, saying that he believes in “pay based on the market and living wage.” He explained that his philosophy may not directly reflect that of his higher-ups.
Malott’s personal view was against investing in irresponsible corporations, but he said that his view was not the deciding factor on CSULB investments.
In examining the possibility of budget cuts from the state, Malott reassured his audience by explaining his first step: “First of all, to protect the instruction. The institution is the people who are involved in it.”
The majority of Malott’s responses related to what he is doing and has done at UMR, such as internal auditing, how its management structure is organized and its allocation of funds. He also elaborated on his attraction to CSULB.
“I love engineers, but they tend to be a little conservative in things,” Malott said. “[CSULB has] an atmosphere a little more engaged, more political.”
Prior to his position at UMR, Malott served nearly 20 years in the U.S. Department of State and worked in India as a government liaison between the United States and Mother Theresa.
