Long Beach State men’s basketball head coach Dan Monson became larger than life when a billboard was put up to promote “Monson Mania” on the corner of Second Street and Glendora in Belmont Shore.
The location couldn’t be better – Monson’s face is right between three of Second Street’s most popular bars, as well as in the vicinity of the new 49er store, The Beach on Second Street, allowing for maximum 49er fan exposure.
But has LBSU gone too far this time? A 1-5 team doesn’t exactly seem like much to brag about. One has to wonder if the heavy promoting is drawing more fans to The Walter Pyramid to watch Monson’s boys.
But I do have to hand it to the athletic department: I never thought I’d see the day that Monson was more popular than Pete Carroll in L.A. County.
