Greek awards ceremony recognizes achievements

More than 600 people packed Woodrow Wilson Classical High School’s auditorium to see how well their Greek organization performed against the others over the past year. Awards ranging from best dry social to the Sports Cup were given out with a total of 40 awards.

Every person in attendance waited more than five months to see who would come out on top from last springs Greek Week. Winning Penny Wars with over 22,000 points was the team made up of Delta Gamma, Pi Kappa Phi and Zeta Phi Rho. Penny Wars raised over $2,300 dollars. The team was also the overall winner for Greek Week.

Daniel Valencia, a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and director of scholarship for the Interfraternity Council, hosted the event. He motivated the crowd even more with his own excitement and enthusiasm for the event.

Delta Gamma and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were both recognized for achieving the highest cumulative grade point averages for women and men. Delta Gamma with a 3.041 average surpassed the all women’s grade point averages, and the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon passed the all men’s with a 2.967 average. Individual greek members were also recognized for having a 4.0.

Last year the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and the Cultural Greek Council got together to raise money for Camp Heart Land during Greek Week. Delta Zeta and Sigma Phi Omega were recognized for their efforts to unite the Greek system. They had a cultural dessert where each member brought a dessert from her heritage to share. Delta Sigma Chi was also recognized for its Leaders Amongst Leaders Workshop. Delta Zeta was awarded the Outstanding Public Relations award along with Delta Chi.

As the night went on, so did the fun. To break up the evening and add a twist, special guest P.A.C. Modern, (Philipino-American Coalition) performed. The audience was in awe of the hip-hop dance moves. They left nothing on the table and gave a jaw dropping performance.

Presenting the award for the Greek Man of the Year and Greek Woman of the Year were last year’s winners and now president of the Interfraternity Council Adrian Haro and now Vice President of Recruitment for Panhellenic Caroline Potter. Greek Woman of the Year went to Kevin Cobos from Delta Zeta and Greek Man of the Year went to the president of Kappa Sigma, Scott Stark-Staples.

Taking home the grand prize, the President’s Cup, was Delta Gamma for sororities and Phi Kappa Tau for the fraternities. All of the awards are based on the Standards of Excellence which includes many categories ranging from scholarship to social events and philanthropic activities.

Caitlin Roberts was also acknowledged for her achievement as the Greek Adviser of the Year for the Western Region.

“I am very proud of everyone, especially the I.F.C. and Panhellenic councils for putting on such a great event. It was great to recognize all the chapters for all their hard work and accomplishments,” said Roberts.
