THE SPORTS GIRL – Introduction

Here’s the deal:

I’m not as funny as Bill Simmons (but I am cuter), nor have I been around the sports world as long as him. But he is a favorite columnist of mine so I decided to do my own take on his column, “The Sports Guy”. If you haven’t read his work in ESPN The Magazine or on ESPN.com I highly recommend it.

But what I’m offering is sports from a female’s perspective. And trust me, I am not your typical female.

As I sit here writing this, I’m currently in Danville, Calif., outside of Oakland, inside the media center at the LPGA Long’s Drugs Challenge. In a few hours I will be begging the two writers sitting in front of me to change the TV from the Golf Channel to the Florida vs. LSU football game. I will also have MLB.com’s live scoring windows pulled up so I can follow every pitch of the two National League Division Series games.

The décor in my bedroom in Long Beach consists of free things that I get at baseball games (my favorite items: a Vladimir Guerrero lunchbox and a Jake Peavy bobblehead), and a couple Sacramento King’s pennants Sacramento Kings mardi gras beads I got in New Orleans this summer (don’t laugh, I’m a die hard Kings fan and proud of it).

There’s a show on TBS called My Boys about a girl named PJ who covers the Chicago Cubs for the Chicago Sun-Times. Last season there was a preview for an episode, and watching it I had one of those oh-my-god-that’s-me moments… one that I wasn’t too proud of. A guy friend of PJ’s is trying to hit on a girl in a bar, and his game is ruined when PJ suddenly comes in between them, pointing to the TV and yelling “Dude did you just see that play?” Now I know why my guy friends will have me over to watch the baseball game, but will never let me go out with them.

As you can see, my life is consumed by sports.

So for the rest of the year I’ll be offering you my insights on sports. From who’s hot on the court (Kobe, as much as it pains me to say it) to who is just plain hot (Russell Martin is easier on the eyes than he is on opposing pitchers); I’ll give you my thoughts on college ball, pro ball and most of all Long Beach State ball.

And of course, there are my many road trips I’ll let readers follow me on. This is my third year covering golf tournaments for my Dad’s Northern California radio show, Golf Talk. I started out as a production assistant when I was 15 and he now has me traveling all over covering tournaments for the show, as well as I freelance for golf magazines and websites.

So far this year I have covered six golf tournaments in LA, Pebble Beach, Pittsburgh and San Francisco, and am on my seventh tournament of the year here in Danville. I still have a couple more golf trips coming up this year and you can bet there will be a few I’ll make to cover the 49ers and the Dirtbags.

I’ll bring you insight from media rooms all around the West Coast, and maybe even a few on the east. And as a former PGATOUR.com writer I still have friends in high places that can pass along information on certain athletes named after jungle animals.

So that’s my deal, take it or leave it. I can’t promise you’ll like me, but I can promise a perspective like no one else’s.

Just call me The Sports Girl. After all, it’s what half of the Dirtbags called me last year when they couldn’t remember my name.
