Hiep Nguyen, an art education graduate student, received a $3,000 scholarship along with the 2007-08 William Hearst/CSU Trustee’s Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Nguyen has a bachelor’s degree in art education and a single-subject teaching credential from Cal State Long Beach.
He found out he won the award while working with disabled students at the School of the Blind in Bangkok, Thailand.
Nguyen said he would use the money to help finish his graduate studies in art education.
One student from each of the 23 California State University campuses was chosen to receive the award based on financial need and superior academic performance, among other things. The winners were honored last Tuesday at the CSU Office of the Chancellor in downtown Long Beach.
According to a release from the CSULB office of Public Affairs, the award provides $3,000 scholarships to students who have demonstrated financial need, experienced personal hardships and have attributes of merit including superior academic performance, exemplary community service and significant personal achievements.
