This week hasn’t been fun for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. While Telemundo 52’s Mirthala Salinas has yet to make a comment that doesn’t involve her “people” doing it for her, everyone will agree that she will be the one most affected by the whole ordeal.
As every journalism student has been told one too many times, ethics plays an important role in this game. When one’s journalistic reputation has been splashed with the slightest amount of unethical mud, the game is over.
Salinas knew the rules. For her career’s sake, the news anchor should have known better. I’m not judging the actions of either one of them. Whatever happened under the sheets should be kept personal.
They are both adults who happened to engage in a relationship that created a conflict of interest. Should Telemundo fire Salinas because of the relationship between her and the mayor? Sure.
Should the people judge Villaraigosa by the man’s affair rather than his job as a mayor? Maybe.
Citizens want politicos who won’t lie to them. We want a clean-cut version of ourselves that won’t betray us and will make the right choices.
But let’s not forget: They’re human, too.
