Federation for American Immigration Reform spokesman Ira Mehlman wanted to do a victory dance when the Senate killed S. 1639, which would have allow millions of undocumented immigrants a path to legal status.
Mehlman wanted to celebrate the shattered dreams, and the possible escape from the shadows, for millions of hardworking men and women.
The bill fell short by 14 votes and, in the end, there was no resolution to the issue. But undocumented students may still have a shot. The Dream Act, which would give undocumented students a shot to apply for citizenship, and the AgJOBS bill are up for consideration as standalone bills.
I’ve used this space to inform the CSULB community about current immigration news that directly affects every person living in the country. It’s my hope that students are informing themselves.
Putting a lid on the issue of immigration while offering no solution seems like an easy way out of a problem that can be fixed.
If politicians hadn’t obsessed so much over trying to achieve a bill so perfect it would please everybody, they could have made some kind of progress.
Turning our backs on students and dancing on their dreams must not be allowed.
