Community complaints brew trouble for Gaslamp Restaurant

Long Beach City Council extends the Gaslamp Restaurant's temporary dancing permit for another 90 days, despite complaints from nearby residents.

LONG BEACH – Gaslamp Restaurant & Bar, a popular Cal State Long Beach stomping ground for students, retained its temporary dancing permit for a 90-day trial period at last week’s city council meeting, despite noise disturbance complaints from nearby residents.

Long Beach City Council members granted Gaslamp owners a grace period from now until mid-September to take the corrective action recommended by the Long Beach Police Department and to work with community members to fix the problems.

Third District City Councilman Gary DeLong moved to deny the restaurant the “permit for entertainment with dancing,” but the motion failed due to the lack of a second by another member of city council.

Major complaints from residents included loud music at late hours, unruly crowds in the parking lot and property damage caused by intoxicated restaurant patrons.

DeLong explained the community was concerned that the Gaslamp, which replaced the nightclub Live Bait in 2005, misrepresented itself to the city as a family restaurant that serves alcohol.

At the meeting DeLong said, “What we seem to have is a nightclub that happens to serve food.”

The Gaslamp is located at 6251 E. PCH, about one mile south of the CSULB campus.
