Republicans in the Senate aren’t buying it. President George W. Bush’s recent push for comprehensive immigration reform is not convincing any members of the GOP.
It might be a tad too late for Bush to try and persuade his own party to agree with him. With his approval rating already at rock bottom, Bush is now trying to convince members of his own party to do what’s right.
Of course, the right thing to do is to agree on a comprehensive immigration reform that will be fair, a reform that will not dehumanize the millions of workers who have taken on jobs that even their own kids are trying to stay away from.
It might sound like the usual sob story, but we cannot overlook the fact that these human beings are needed in our economy. It is extremely unfair that they are being treated like faceless numbers that can be shifted from one place to another.
Republicans who back the bill for the immigration reform would love it if the president would just shut up and listen to what the opposition has to say, according to an article from The Denver Post. And what the opposition has to say is that they don’t want amnesty. It is the “A-word” that is keeping Republicans on the edge, afraid that another reform will bring massive amounts of unwelcome workers. After last week, who knows what the outcome of the whole issue will be?
With Monday’s announcement that California Sen. Barbara Boxer signed on to support the DREAM Act – a bill that would allow undocumented students a path to legalization and is one of the most talked about issues regarding the immigration reform – all moves are game.
