Letter to the Editor – Border fence necessary to keep neighbors friendly

Sadly, the writer got most of the June 7 Summer Forty-Niner article “American immigration laws need restructuring, not fence structures” about the southern fence and illegal immigration wrong.

Let us start with Robert Frost’s line “good fences make good neighbors.” In New England, where Frost lived, this truism is easy to see. Stone fences are built by both parties. They mark the boundary of the property and clearly define who is responsible for what.

Mexico has not kept up its side of the border. Not only have they not done the work needed for their citizens, they actively seek to export their problems to “El Norte.”

This policy of supporting the cause of their expatriates in the United States serves their purpose twofold. The nation gets a much-needed influx of hard cash and the discontented have a place to go and not shake up the Mexican government.

As for the “racism” and “bigotry,” balderdash. The law applies to everyone here illegally, regardless of national origin. Each and everyone must go home and pay the fines.

Let us not forget that Latinos are Europeans and are not members of a different race. Treating them as such and applying labels to them is the true bigotry.

While you are vilifying those groups for trying to protect America, remember two things.

First, “Reconquista” is a real political movement. Second, American citizens are the government and they have spoken on this issue very strongly; they oppose the current law and the proposed law.
