On Sunday morning before the Dirtbags clinched their final Big West Conference series against CS Fullerton, the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee announced the regional sites for the 2007 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Blair Field was selected as a regional site, and Long Beach State the host.
Long Beach State, which tied for second with UC Irvine in the Big West, was awarded an at-large big and it was announced that Blair Field would host next weekend’s regional tournament for the third time. Blair Field has previously hosted three regionals and one super regional.
The No. 16 Dirtbags (37-18) are seeded No. 1 in the bracket. They will serve as hosts to No. 2-seeded Pepperdine (35-20), No. 3-seeded UCLA (30-26) and No. 4-seeded Illinois-Chicago (34-19).
During the regular season, LBSU swept both the Waves and the Bruins. The Dirtbags defeated Pepperdine, which finished third in the West Coast Conference, 10-7 and 6-5. The Pac-10 third place UCLA fell to the Dirtbags 14-1 and 4-2. They did not play the Horizon League Conference winner Chicago-Illinois.
This will be the Dirtbags’ 16th NCAA Regional appearance.
