After a three game sweep at Pacific this weekend, the Dirtbags are at the top of the Big West standings.
LBSU (27-14, 7-2) beat last place Pacific (10-33, 0-11) 8-6 on Friday, 8-4 on Saturday and then on Sunday, the Dirtbags won 14-9 in 14 innings.
In the opening game of the series, LBSU scored four runs in the final three innings and the bullpen shutout the Tigers in the last four innings, as the Dirtbags completed the comeback victory.
Things went a little smoother Saturday, as the 49ers jumped out to a 5-0 lead through five innings and Andrew Liebel pitched 7 2/3 innings in his first collegiate start to lead the Dirtbags to the victory.
The Dirtbags completed the sweep Sunday in a game that lasted nearly six hours. LBSU scored five runs in the top of the 14th to finish the marathon game.
Water Polo
The Long Beach State women’s water polo team was able to pull off one upset in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Tempe, Ariz., but lost to UCLA in the quarterfinals.
Marina Canetti scored four goals to help the No. 10-seeded 49ers beat No. 7-seeded California 12-9 on Thursday.
On Friday, UCLA jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter en route to cruising to a 17-5 win over LBSU.
After being eliminated from the tournament, LBSU (8-19) played in the consolation bracket, losing to San Jose State Saturday and UC Irvine Sunday to finish the 2007 campaign.
Softball
Bridgette Pagano pitched 16 scoreless innings this weekend, leading LBSU to two wins in its three-game series at Pacific.
Pagano had an epic pitchers dual with Pacific’s Chelsea Engel Saturday, with both pitchers shutting out the opposition for eight innings.
LBSU eventually broke the tie, with pinch runner Stefanie Trutanic scoring in the top of the ninth, and Pagano pitched the ninth to win the game 1-0.
The 49ers then lost in the second game Saturday, losing 11-2, but Pagano was back in the circle Sunday, pitching seven scoreless innings leading LBSU to a 6-0 win.
