If you were walking in front of the library Tuesday just outside of Liberal Arts 1, you may have seen a very disturbing poster.
Its a four-frame comic titled, “Buddha, will he be arrested?” The first frame is of Buddha seeing St. Peter’s Cathedral, saying, “Wow, St. Peter’s Cathedral!” The second frame is of Buddha and a police officer saying, “I’m the new generation of undertaker I’m taking you to the underworld.” The third frame says, “The reason is…” and the fourth says, “an unlawful interference in the execution of not being in hell for 2500 years.” Lastly there is an open book in the frame that says, “Believe in Jesus you go to heaven. Believe not you go to HELL!” Now, had someone just posted this for the hell of it, I would have been slightly annoyed. However, off to the right there was a stamp that said, “Approved for posting – Student Life and Development.”
This kind of material is highly offensive and promotes discrimination. If there isn’t already, there should be easily accessible regulations on what can and cannot be posted for recognized campus organizations.
I looked on the Student Life and Development Web site and could not find which kinds of material could be posted by a student organization. I strongly believe that everyone has a right to freedom of speech, and that’s fine. However, as a public organization, Cal State Long Beach needs to be aware of what kind of information it is promoting, especially with a campus as widely diverse as this one.
