Letter to the Editor – LBGT coverage appreciated

On behalf of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center, I am writing to express my deep appreciation to City Editor Allison Baldwin, Photo Editor Chay Chhuon, photographer Sarah Castro and the Daily Forty-Niner staff for their comprehensive and informative coverage of LGBT Diversity Week at Cal State Long Beach.

Since this public education program was new to campus, it was important to notify students, staff and faculty about our series of events. Baldwin’s pre-event coverage on April 10 raised the issue of diversity within the LGBT community and helped the campus learn more about this series of panel presentations, film screenings and book readings. Chhuon’s coverage of the Gender/Gender Identity Panel on April 17 highlighted an important issue that is just gaining greater visibility within the LGBT and heterosexual ally communities.

We were also very pleased with Castro’s documentation of the LGBT Artist Collective’s visual representation of harassment and violence toward LGBT individuals during our Day of Silence event on April.

Special thanks to you and your staff for outstanding coverage of LGBT Diversity Week at CSULB. As a member of the LGBT campus community, I thank you for rendering an often-invisible community visible and vibrant. The Daily Forty-Niner‘s extensive coverage of LGBT Diversity Week at CSULB has helped new students become more aware of resources and support networks on campus.
