The students voted yes for the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC), but what’s going to happen next?
The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees still needs to approve the SRWC, said Amanda Stone, chairwoman of the University Student Union Board of Trustees.
“We are getting really excited,” Stone said. “Hopefully, the plans and decision-making will start next fall.”
According to Associate Vice President for Physical Planning and Facilities Management Scott Charmack, the proposed SRWC still needs to be approved by the fee committee because it is a project that is not funded by the state. The Chancellor’s Office will then need to approve the financial plan, which will be presented to the board for approval in May. If they do not reach a decision about it then, it will wait until July, Charmack said.
The entire construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2009 and finish in about 15 to 16 months, Charmack said.
The plan, as it stands now, is to create a team of people to design and build the SRWC. They will have to be approved by the CSU Board of Trustees, and once the team is created, they will make drawings and schematics (all of which must be approved by the CSU Board of Trustees). The design should take 14 to 15 months to be finalized, Charmack said.
There is a preliminary design that was created years ago, but it will be recreated and redesigned to meet students’ specific needs and desires, according to Charmack.
