Men’s Volleyball
Long Beach State notched its fourth straight win by defeating Purdue-Fort Wayne 3-2 (30-25, 30-24, 26-30, 26-30, 15-12) and Penn State 3-2 (30-19, 27-30, 28-30, 30-26, 15-13). Paul Lotman was named tournament MVP after posting his fourth double-double with 21 kills and 11 digs.
Baseball
No. 17 Long Beach State traveled to Kansas to take on No. 12 Wichita State. On Friday night, a two-run homer up center by Brandon Godfrey in the ninth gave the Dirtbags a 2-1 win over the Shockers, but Wichita evened the series the next day with a 8-7 defeat for LBSU. On Sunday, the Dirtbags pushed a series-clincher into 13 innings, but failed to capitalize on a 2-0 lead, as the Shockers overtook the Dirtgas 3-2.
Track and Field
Two Long Beach State runners posted regional qualifying scores at the 66th Annual Long Beach Relays at the Jack Rose Track on Saturday. Alex Freitas won the 800-meter, en route to posting an LBSU freshman record, and surpassing reigning Big West champion and school-record holder, teammate Mario Cobain. Brent Gray set a school record in the 100-meter and won the 200-meter.
Softball
The 49ers defeated Miami (Ohio) 5-1 on Wednesday during their home opener. Last week’s Big West Pitcher of the Week, Bridgette Pagano, allowed only one run on four hits. The 49ers got on the board early, tying the game 1 all, with a single up center from Panita Thanatharn to send in Breezy Goad in the bottom of the first. LBSU launched an offensive attack when Kourtney Gervasi hit a two-run double with bases loaded in the bottom of third.
Women’s Water Polo
No. 2 UCLA remained undefeated in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play as it overtook the 49ers 9-1 on Thursday. UCLA’s Kelly Rulon, a U.S. National Team member, surpassed 49er head coach Catherine von Shwarz’s mark to become UCLA’s leading all-time scorer.
Women’s Tennis
No. 58 Long Beach State defeated No. 52 Iowa 4-3 at home on Thursday. LBSU swept doubles play with three 8-5 scores, and No. 3 Stephanie Bengson, No. 5 Sandra Rocha and No. 6 Rachel Porsz all emerged victorious to give the 49ers a 1-point victory.
