University Library to use book paging system

In a reverse move from what was announced last week, the University Library’s books on floors two and three – approximately two-thirds of its total collection – will now be available via a paging system.

Last week, the Daily Forty-Niner reported that the University Library, due to its renovation, would make the large collection of books be limited or inaccessible and that students would have to order their books from other participating libraries via the LINK+ system.

“Essentially, we will have an online form which students and faculty will fill out and submit to us. Hopefully, they will get the materials within 24 hours,” said Sara Sluss, interim associate dean of the library. All of the details are still being sorted out, she said.

Library Dean Roman Kochan and Administrative Services Librarian Henry J. DuBois were both unavailable for comment.

The new lower levels of the library are also open. The bottom floor has places for studying, media and current periodicals, course reserves and map collections to be used during the remodeling, Sluss said.

The first floor now has a temporary computer outpost, printers and copiers, and the reference desk and books. Coming soon to the first floor will be about 200 computers and new furniture, Sluss said. The computers should be in this month.

Floors two and three are essentially empty now, excluding the books.

The fourth floor, where the library administration offices are located, is staying open for this phase of reconstruction.

The fifth floor now has a large room with seating for 100 or more. The mystery collection has also been moved to this floor, and when the renovation is complete, it will be opened up to become one large study area. The President’s Scholars offices, as well as the University Honors Program, have also been moved to the fifth floor.
