A female student on the second floor west of the Los Alamitos Hall dormitory has contracted bacterial meningitis and is in a local hospital, said Stan Olin, director of Housing & Residential Life, via a mass e-mail Monday afternoon.
“Should you be feeling ill (with symptoms like fever, stiffness in the neck, rash, headache and fatigue) please visit the Student Health Center immediately to be evaluated. Also, if you have been in close contact with our sick resident since February 23, please see the Student Health Center to get treated with antibiotics,” Olin wrote in the e-mail.
Because that type of meningitis can be very dangerous, Olin said, the following steps have been taken:
• The Student Health Center will have clinics Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. to provide vaccinations for meningitis.
• All bathrooms in Los Alamitos Hall will be disinfected twice a day.
• Group activities in the dorms this week will be rescheduled.
Other health tips in the e-mail were using good hand-washing techniques and coughing into your elbow instead of hands to avoid spreading germs.
People with questions are advised to contact Nop Ratanasiripong in the Student Health Center at (562) 985-7075.
