The Long Beach State women’s basketball team will go into the Big West Tournament as the No. 6 seed, after beating host UC Irvine 77-63 Saturday night.
The 49ers (7-22, 4-10) were led by Karina Figueroa, who tied her career-high with 29 points. LBSU will meet UC Irvine (6-23, 3-11) again in the first round of the Big West Tournament Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m., at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Softball
In the UCLA Tournament this weekend, LBSU (5-12) lost to Florida 3-2 and UCLA 11-0 on Friday. The 49ers recovered Saturday, beating Illinois State 5-4, but fell in the rematch against Illinois State Sunday, losing 8-5.
Women’s Tennis
LBSU (6-5, 4-1) ended its four-match losing streak Saturday, beating visiting Cal Poly 6-1. On Thursday, the 49ers lost their first conference match of the year, falling 4-3 to No. 41 UC Irvine.
Track and Field
Jennifer Onyeabako highlighted the 49ers’ performance at the UCLA Invitational, by throwing the hammer 170’6″, the fourth-longest”hammer throw in school history.
Men’s Volleyball
No. 14 LBSU (7-9, 3-8) almost pulled off the upset Saturday night, but ended up losing to host No. 2 UC Irvine 3-2.
Women’s Water Polo
LBSU (5-5, 1-1) won its first conference game of the season, beating Cal State Northridge 8-4 at the Campus Pool Saturday afternoon.
