Senate appoints three new members

A new senator-at-large, associate justice and chief of staff were chosen at Wednesday’s ASI Senate meeting.

Senior black studies major Kiresha Walker and freshman Raul Preciado both ran for the senator-at-large position.

But after the Senate debated and asked a round of questions, Preciado was chosen to fill the position as the new senator-at-large.

Preciado said he knows what his new leadership role entails.

He served as president of the student body at Thomas Jefferson High in Los Angeles and also volunteered in the Peer Partnership program.

Preciado said he credits his communication skills to other students, as the main reason why he said would make a great senator.

Sen. George Del Hierro said he “is confident that he will do great things for this school.”

Business major Lavina Mirchandani, who is an international student from the Caribbean, was appointed to the associate justice position, and kinesiology major Sandra Olmedo was appointed to be the new president’s chief of staff.

Additionally, Sen. Lucy Montano administered a Dead Week and Study Period Survey for students of the College of Education to participate in. The purpose of dead week would be for students to prepare and study for final examinations. Classes will be in session, but no tests, graded assignments or projects would be due during dead week.

The Dead Week and Study Period Survey pertains to the possible implementation of a dead week into each semester.

A total of 268 students were surveyed about the dead week and answered various questions regarding finals exams.

Of the students surveyed, 92 percent voted in favor of the dead week, with 74 percent of students saying they studied the most during the week before final exams.

The Senate acknowledged that a dead week might work for the campus, considering the large percentage of students who study the week before for finals.
