FEEDBACK! – Rec Center Our View justified

In regards to the letter to the editor published in the Feb. 26 issue of the Daily Forty-Niner, titled “Rec Center article has very poor foundation,” the Daily Forty-Niner feels that its assertions were justified and well-researched.

A misconception about editorials is that they are written in a fashion like news articles, to inform people. Editorials are generally an analysis of the news and a way to provide people with a forum for debate.

Another false assertion made by the writer of the letter was that most people on campus will see the opening of the rec center. As of the most recent information collected by on the Cal State Long Beach Web site, there are only 2,318 freshmen enrolled. This means that if following the traditional four year program, only about seven percent of students will still be around in 2010 when the rec center is scheduled to open. Even including those who take longer than four years, that is only a fraction of the current students.

Although in our editorial we only sourced this newspaper, as of the date of the editorial the Daily Forty-Niner was the only newspaper consistently following the issue, which makes sourcing other publications difficult.
