Students interested in finding technical jobs can take a step in the right direction at the Engineering, Science and Technology Job Fair, which will be held in the University Student Union Ballroom Wednesday afternoon.
The Career Development Center (CDC), the sponsor for the event, will host the fair, which gives students the opportunity to interview with more than 90 companies in the engineering field from noon to 4 p.m.
While, according to the CDC Web site, most of the recruiters are seeking students majoring in technical areas (e.g. physics, mechanical engineering & aerospace and electrical engineering) some participants, like the Los Angeles Unified School District and Walt Disney Imagineering, are seeking applicants from all majors and degree levels.
“This is the largest fair we’ve ever had,” said Phyllis Milani, events coordinator for the CDC. “Four years ago, we had 26 employers; this year we have 96.”
All companies attending the fair will be available for review on the CDC Web site, Milani said. Students will be able to sort through them by major and industry, with links to all of the company sites and the fair table numbers for each company. The CDC site will also have a map available that tells you where each company will be located at the event.
If a student does not have access to a computer, fliers that contain information about each individual company, printed by the business department of the Daily Forty-Niner specifically for the fair, are available in the CDC.
This year’s engineering job fair focuses specifically on the science and technical aspect of engineering, and Milani said this was intentional because they could not make room for all of the participants in the engineering job field.
“We can’t accommodate everyone,” Milani said. “We used to have the spring and fall job fairs in one day, which is why we separate them now into two different days. It leaves much more space for companies in the spring.”
There will also be a general information booth set up at the event, with computers ready for students to set up BeachLINK accounts that allow the CDC to keep students informed about events and career opportunities.
The employers that will be present at the fair are not just looking for full-time employees. There will be both part-time jobs and internships available.
Milani said that everyone from any class or major is welcome, not just graduating engineering students. But if students do fall into that category and is on a serious job search, they should research the company beforehand and bring a résumé, which the CDC will be able to review before the fair.
