Students choose a ‘Heartthrob’ for a good cause

Alpha Phi hosted its annual philanthropy event Mr. Heartthrob on Feb. 21 at McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach.

For the past four years, Alpha Phi has hosted a male pageant show as an opportunity to raise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation, which supports women’s cardiac care research.

“The night was a huge success, we were really happy with the turnout this year,” said Jana Kerby, an Alpha Phi member and pageant coordinator. “Members from various campus organizations were in attendance including people from sports teams, campus clubs and the Greek system.”

Some people came to support the cause; others came to support friends competing.

“I came tonight to root on my friends from Phi Kappa Tau and Theta Kai,” said Delta Zeta member Jackie Aguirre. “All the guys are great, I’m really surprised by how talented they all are.”

The contestants included one member from each campus fraternity as well as one member from each of the water polo and soccer teams. The pageant began with a choreographed dance in which all of the contestants participated. The opening dance was followed by the personality, attire, swimsuit, talent, formal wear and interview competitions. The night ended with the crowning of Mr. Heartthrob 2007 – Sigma Pi member Dylan Agajanian.

“This whole experience has just been amazing, I enjoyed it a lot,” Agajanian said. “I’m really happy that I got the opportunity to represent my fraternity in a positive light.”

Alpha Phi raised more $2,000 for the Alpha Phi Foundation at the pageant.

“This event was very important to us because it helped support one of the sole reasons for why Alpha Phi exists,” said Alpha Phi President Jenn Szewczynski.
