The Seattle’s Best coffeehouse in Los Alamitos will be named “The Ground Floor” and the Seattle’s Best coffeehouse in the Parkside Commons dormitories will be named “Central Park.”
Cal State Long Beach student Emma Lunardi named the coffeehouse in Los Alamitos and freshman Arthur Moreau named the coffeehouse in Parkside. Stan Olin, director of Housing & Residential Life, also presented Lunardi and Moreau with $100 to be placed on their Beach Club accounts from the 49er Shops, Inc.
Before the announcement, Moreau confessed that at the time he entered the contest, he didn’t remember anyone talking about winning a prize.
“It’s like, enter a name, it’d be cool if you win,” Moreau said. “I was like, OK.”
The contest lasted two weeks, from Jan. 29 to Feb. 9. The winners were chosen among 214 entries.
“We decided we needed to come up with names for these places,” Olin said to a crowd of CSULB staff members and students. “We didn’t want to just call them ‘Coffeehouse 1’ and ‘Coffeehouse 2.’ And where do you get good ideas from? You get them from students.”
CSULB President F. King Alexander said the coffeehouse is a place for students to eat late at night so they will not have to wander off campus.
“Last year, a couple of students came to my office and said the only choices [for food and drinks] were vending machines after the dining halls closed,” Alexander said. “So we actually pulled out some old plans and got to work on what we could do about getting a coffeehouse.”
Shefali Mistry, president of Associated Students Inc., said she was happy to be involved with the opening of the coffeehouses.
“I remember everyone was talking about all these things they wanted from the dorms,” Mistry said. “They wanted everything to be open longer, they wanted to be able to eat after dinner time, or before breakfast or in between lunch … We’re really excited to bring [the coffeehouses] to you and the students have been really excited to do that.”
