In its final home game of the season, the Long Beach State women’s basketball team finally gave its fans something to cheer about by beating Cal State Fullerton 73-59 at The Walter Pyramid Saturday afternoon.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for LBSU (6-21, 3-10), which had only won twice in 2007.
Karina Figueroa once again led the way for the 49ers by ringing up 29 points and seven rebounds, while Brett Timmons added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The game looked like it would be another disappointment for the 49ers in the first few minutes as Fullerton quickly bolted out to a 10-0 lead. LBSU responded with a 13-4 run to cut the Titans’ lead to three. However, Fullerton was able to hold on to a 36-31 halftime lead.
The Titans’ Dayna Frias nailed a three to cut LBSU’s lead to 62-57 with 3:20 remaining. The 49ers finished the game off with an 11-2 run to pull out the victory.
On Thursday night, LBSU fell to first-place UC Riverside (17-9, 11-1) 52-45.
Brittany Waddell led the Highlanders with 16 points and 6 rebounds, shooting 3-8 from the three-point line. Kemie Nkele followed with 12 points and 10 rebounds, including four blocked shots.
The 49ers led only once in the game, scoring the opening basket. UC Riverside responded with a 10-0 run after and led the rest of the game.
