Every once and a while, someone comes up with an idea so genius, you can’t believe no one thought of it before. I’m not really one to get into Valentine’s Day, because I’m usually single. However, there is another relationship-based day that I can really get behind. Today, Feb. 15, is the “International ‘That’s What She Said’ Day.”
This is a day for all those out there who constantly feel the need to hold back when someone says something that could be considered a double entendre, and I think a lot of people could find solace in a day that allows for those with dirty minds to say every little sexual joke that comes to them.
This particular day of observance has been credited to John Hughes of Seattle, whose Facebook event “International ‘That’s What She Said’ Day,” had 145,435 members confirmed as participants as of 1:10 p.m. yesterday.
I applaud Hughes for his idea and initiative. For too long those of us with minds that are permanently in the gutter have been oppressed by what is politically correct. I think that this is a step in the right direction.
This is a step toward greater acceptance of those people who have no real understanding of tact or how to inject sophisticated humor into a conversation.
This is a day to be celebrated. For one day only, those people who normally groan and grumble when someone makes a sexual-innuendo joke have to grin and bear it. This is a day of freedom and acceptance, and I intend to make the most of it.
For those of you out there who don’t find any reason to add your own bit of innuendo into the world today, I propose adding an intellectual twist to the celebration. Take some time to catch up on your Shake-speare. Read “Romeo and Juliet,” and really indulge in the language spewed forth by Mercutio and the nurse or enjoy the not-so-subtle dialogue in Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata.”
Not enough time? Then indulge in some Quagmire-focused episodes on “Family Guy” or catch up with “The Todd” and his uncouth attempts at sexual humor tonight on “Scrubs.” I encourage everyone to take a little time today to celebrate your own dirty sense of humor.
Yesterday was Valentine’s Day; a day that celebrates love, couples and all that jazz. But today is a whole new ballgame. This is a day all people can celebrate, whether they’re single, in a relationship or even floating by themselves in space.
So go on out there, have some fun and disgust your friends and family. It might seem hard at first, but I’m sure you can do it if you try.
I know, I know. “That’s what she said.”
