Two Long Beach State men’s basketball players, seniors Kejuan Johnson and Mark Dawson, have been suspended, regarding eligibility issues prior to their attendance at LBSU.
Assistant coach Reggie Howard has also been suspended for his recruitment of prospective students during the summer of 2005.
“We are taking these proactive steps while working closely with the NCAA as they continue to inquire about these issues,” said LBSU Athletic Director Vic Cegles in an e-mail statement.
According to LBSU spokesman Toni Beron, the NCAA first came on campus to investigate the men’s basketball program in either late October or early November.
The university has not announced how long the suspensions are going to be, but Doug Robinson, vice president for Student Services, said that “there will be a set amount of games for the suspensions.”
Johnson, a starting guard who came to LBSU from Long Beach City College in the fall of 2005, is the 49ers second leading scorer this season, averaging 15.1 points and 31.3 minutes per game.
Dawson, a backup forward who came to LBSU from Pasadena City College in fall 2004, is averaging 5.7 points per game and 4.1 rebounds in 16.9 minutes this season.
Howard came to LBSU in 2001 and has been the main coordinator for recruiting and scheduling.
