Students raise over $5,000 for charity event

The students of professor Robert Garcia’s communication studies Special Topics class held a semi-formal benefit event Dec. 6 at the Sachi Lounge in Long Beach to help support the Children Today Organization. The event was planned entirely by the students of Professor Garcia’s Special Topics course.

“The students did a great job planning the event,” Garcia said.

A silent auction was held for the event catered with cocktails and appetizers. Everything at the event was donated, thanks to efforts put forth by the students.

Donations from the local community helped make the event possible. Vons, Claim Jumper, Wolfgang Puck and Bristol Farms donated food for those in attendance. Companies donated gifts as such as Universal Studios tickets, hockey game tickets, artwork and other various items for the fund-raising silent auction.

The students were able to gather more than $5,000, all of which will be donated to the charity.

“Not only did everyone have a great time, but the money raised will go towards a great cause,” Garcia said.

The mission of Children Today is, “To provide community-based services to children and families experiencing homelessness, fostering long-term stability and success.”

“It was such a great experience working with Children Today. It is good knowing all our hard work went to a good cause,” said Morgan Cepparo, a senior communications major.
