Long Beach State’s men’s water polo team will try and carry over some momentum gained from its two wins last week in Northern California, when The Beach beat Air Force and UC Davis. LBSU (7-12, 0-4) has three matches this weekend, two away from home, at UC Irvine (7-14, 1-3) Thursday and at UC Santa Barbara (16-11, 1-3) Friday, and will come home to play Pepperdine (11-13, 1-3) Sunday. The defense, which had struggle early in the year, has shown improvement as of late. Goalie Steve MacKenzie had a career-best 14 saves last week against Stanford, a match LBSU lost 6-5. Last weekend, LBSU had a 5.33 goals against average which is about four goals lower than its season average. LBSU gave up a season low against Air Force last Sunday, in an 11-3 win. The matches against UCSB and Pepperdine are even more important, becuase they are Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches. So far this season The Beach is winless in conference play, with four conference matches left until the MPSF Tournament.
