In a contemporary industry where the difference between hip-hop and R&B is almost undefined, there is at least one new artist that is staying true to Rhythm and Blues. I introduce, Robin Thicke.
In his follow-up solo effort to his 2002 “A Beautiful World” debut, the album “The Evolution of Robin Thicke,” released on Star Trak/Interscope/Overbrook, has listeners catching themselves saying this is Jon B. reborn into the 21st century.
The Beverly Hills native has dropped the notable singles “Wanna Love You Girl” featuring Pharrell Williams and “Shooter” featuring Lil’ Wayne.
His latest single, “Lost Without You,” shows a softer side of the man and is a more vocally ranging song about losing his girl. The album would receive five mics from me because the production is amazing, as Thicke himself plays the piano, drums and guitar on most of the tracks.
Thicke sings along side Lil’ Wayne’s raps once again in the festive banger “All Night Long,” which showcases a different side of Lil’ Wayne, a collaboration highly unexpected, but definitely not a disappointment.
The baby-making song “Teach You a Lesson” is a metaphor for bedroom talk and the song “I Need Love” is a cry out to the ladies asking for some healing like Marvin Gaye asked.
On the other hand, “2 the Sky,” “Angels” and “Lonely World” are more inspirational songs, displaying Thicke’s range not only as a vocalist and musician but as a songwriter as well.
Hopefully this time around, he’ll achieve more success than his debut, which sold a humble 58,000 copies.
This is definitely an album a woman can play all day for a week and not get tired of it.
The incredible instrumentation and Lil’ Wayne appearances may tempt a guy to go spend the dub.
You decide.
