The fraternity Zeta Phi Rho held an event last Thursday at the Soroptomist house to celebrate Pilipino American Heritage Month.
The night included a discussion on cuisine and the history of tattoos in the Pilipino culture. The goal of the event aimed towards bringing knowledge, pride and awareness of the Pilipino cultural identity.
“For past years we did events with martial arts for the month, but this year we wanted to try something different,” said Chris Chantakrivat, 4th year microbiology major. “Almost everyone has some type of knowledge or experience with Pilipino food, we just wanted to give an opportunity to really bring a better understanding of it and provide a context while giving students another reason to come.”
The presentation made by Tatak Ng Apat Na Alon: Mark of the Four Waves, focused on their organizations cause of reviving the Filipino tattoo traditions. They showcased photos of the history of the Philippine islands and the many cultures that have created what the Philippines are today. They as well discussed many misconceptions people have, especially many Filipino-Americans, on the culture of Filipinos and the concept of colonial identity.
“It is important to remain proud of your culture, and the best way of doing that is by showcasing all facets of it,” said Rian Abraham, 3rd year mechanical engineering major. “PAHM is a chance to invite friends of different cultures and backgrounds to share in a new experience that pertains to one’s own identity. It helps us all to learn acceptance and understanding of the value of diversity.”
At the end guests were invited to eat Pilipino cuisine including many of the items that were discussed at the beginning of the lecture like lumpia (egg rolls).
“I only came to support a fellow Greek organization, I really didn’t know what it was all about,” said Nicole Jackson, 3rd year psychology major. “However by the time I left, I had a better understanding of a rich and cultural identity that I didn’t know before.”
Every week during Pilipino American Heritage Month each organization on campus that is part of PAHM plans and hosts an event.
