‘Sipping Jetstreams’ will screen for charity

Catching good waves before class and going to surf competitions aren’t only what The Beach’s surf team is all about. At 7 p.m. Oct. 17, the surf team is holding a screening of the film “Sipping Jetstreams” in the Beach Auditorium for charity.

Junior communications major Aaron Lieber is a member of the surf team and helped set up this special event.

“I was called to edit a bonus section of the DVD [Sipping Jetstreams],” Lieber said.

“I helped them set up a premiere for the film in San Diego and asked if I could use the film for a premiere at school, for the surf team.”

All proceeds will go to the Bantul Kindergarten Project, which is part of Manusia Untuk Masyarakat or MUM (people for the community).

On May 27, 2006 a large earthquake struck off the coast of Java, killing 5,761 people and leaving over half a million people homeless. One of the directors of MUM, Alison Chester, went to Yogyakarta, Indonesia after the large earthquake and decided that one of the best ways to help rebuild would be to set up a sense of normalcy and create classrooms for the displaced youth of Bantul.

“I thought [Bantul Kinder-garden Project] was a better cause than the surf team,” Lieber said.

The movie costs $1 for students and $5 for non-students. A raffle will also be held for the charity. Prizes include: Sanuk sandals, two $100 gift certificates to Prescription Surfboards and other surf prizes.
