CSULB student has enjoyed her time interning with the L.A. Kings.
Public relations is a demanding field with endless opportunities. As a public relations student here at Cal State Long Beach, I feel fortunate to be happy within my major. It’s been stressed by my professors that public relations is a fast-paced environment where experience is necessary. But it wasn’t until this fall when I realized just how necessary experience will be for my future career.
I have been a member of the Public Relations Student Society on campus for a few years now. As a member I receive biweekly e-mails about job and internship opportunities in the area.
A month ago, I saw an offer from the Los Angeles Kings. I have always had an interest in sports public relations and thought this would be an excellent opportunity.
After revising my resume and creating a cover letter suited for the position, I sent my resume via e-mail. Two days later, I was one of the 10 new interns for the Kings.
I am astonished by how quickly things have been happening and I’m loving my new job. In order to accept the internship, I was forced to resign from my position as a teller at a local bank. Although I have been in the banking business since high school, I feel I am doing more for my career now than I have been during my entire college career.
I have not been there that long, but I have already been working on so many different projects. The sports industry is constantly moving forward at a very fast pace. I have already learned to make it in the field I need to work quickly for. If I can do that, I have been advised by my boss that I will do well. I can’t wait!
As a senior graduating in the spring, I wish I made time for more internships in the past. I always told myself, “I will do it next semester.” I am so thankful I did not wait until after I graduated.
It is recommended by professors in the department that students have three internships before they graduate. I now understand why.
Public relations is a huge industry and there is so much to be learned. There are some things that cannot be learned in the classroom. I truly believe the deepest knowledge comes from experience. With that experience combined with the solid foundation the journalism department is providing, I am confident it will lead me to success in my future.
