Hampton collects second Big West honor in three weeks

Sophomore middle blocker Haleigh Hampton, right, earned her second Big West Conference Player of the Week on Monday after leading the women's volleyball team to a pair of wins last weekend.

Sophomore middle blocker Haleigh Hampton earned her second weekly accolade of the season from the Big West Conference on Monday as she was named Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week.

Hampton is just the second player in the conference to win at least two player of the week awards this year along with Cal Poly’s Jennifer Keddy. Hampton took home her first weekly honor on Oct. 10.

She claimed the honor after leading the 49ers to their fifth and sixth consecutive wins this past weekend against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, which kept LBSU (14-6, 8-2 Big West) atop the Big West standings by two and a half matches.

Hampton paced the ‘Niners in kills in both matches. She had 20 kills on .500 hitting against the Mustangs, and then finished with 19 on .267 hitting the following night against the Gauchos. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native also tallied three aces against the Mustangs, and finished with four overall in the two matches.

Hampton averaged 4.33 kills per set on the weekend. The conference’s top blocker also had 10 total blocks on the weekend, including four down the stretch in the fourth set against Cal Poly to cap a 12-1 run that ended that set and forced a fifth frame, which the 49ers eventually won.

Hampton will be back in action with the 49ers this weekend for a pair of home matches against UC Riverside (Friday) and Cal State Northridge (Saturday) at the Walter Pyramid. Both contests are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Others nominated: Kristina Graven (Cal Poly), Casey Hinger (Cal State Northridge), Shaina Olsen (UC Irvine), Jennifer Sanders (University of the Pacific).
