Pitchers receive weekly conference honors

Long Beach State’s Erin Jones-Wesley and Andrew Gagnon were honored Monday with Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week nods after both hurlers defeated top-25 programs for their respective teams.

Jones-Wesley’s right arm powered the 49ers softball team to a 2-1 victory over No. 6-ranked Oklahoma. The true freshman allowed one run on six hits and struck out six batters last Friday in a complete-game effort.

Meanwhile, Gagnon (1-1) threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings that day to lead the Dirtbags to a 2-1 victory over No. 17 Arizona at Blair Field.

Jones-Wesley (5-1) also went eight innings last Thursday in a 5-1 victory over Utah. She allowed one unearned run and scattered five hits.

The 5-8 pitcher was dealt her first collegiate loss to cap the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. In a 5-3 loss to No. 19 Oklahoma State, Jones-Wesley allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out six over six innings in the circle.
