Women’s tennis cruises, 7-0

LBSU women’s tennis team (5-1) continued its five-match winning streak with an easy 7-0 outing against nonconference opponent Nevada (1-6) on Sunday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.

The 49ers’ head coach, Jenny Hilt-Costello, attributes the decisive victory to Saturday’s rigorous play against Cal State Northridge.

“We had a tough match [against CSUN] but we got through it, you know, with a gut check,” she said. “And we were definitely better today because of the work we did yesterday.”

Of the numerous singles play wins, the most defining victory came at the No. 6 slot with junior Rachel Manasse breezing to a victory over Sophie Stevens, 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Sarah Cantlay also had an easy match, outscoring Gabrielle Eufrasio, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 action. Meanwhile, sophomore Anna Jeczmionka, the No. 4 singles player, beat Aodhnait Lombard, 6-3, 6-1.

In No. 1 singles, Anais Dallara continued her dominance against Michelle Okhremchuck, 6-4, 6-2.

The most grueling match of the day came at No. 3 action involving LBSU senior Deborah Armstrong and Lais Ogata. Both players won a set but at the end, Armstrong won the match with in a 10-point tiebreaking frame making match score, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3.

“I struggled like the whole match,” Armstrong said. “The team had already gotten the win, so I just had to keep it together for those 10 points.”

Jaklin Alawi won against Emma Verbenne, 6-4, 6-1, to round out the scores.

The 49ers succeeded at doubles play also, winning by large differences in both of the matches it won.

The No. 1 tandem of Dallara and Armstrong outplayed their counterparts, Ogata and Verbenne, 8-2. Alawi and Jeczmionka topped Eufrasio and Stevens at No. 3 action, 8-0.

The only loss of the day came at No. 2 doubles play as Cantlay and junior Julie Lazar fell to Lombard and Okhremchuck, 8-6.

The Beach’s next match is Friday at No. 60 San Diego State.
