Men’s volleyball selected 9th by MPSF coaches

The Long Beach State men’s volleyball team was selected to finish in ninth place next season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, according to the conference’s 12 head coaches.

The 49ers earned 43 points to finish ahead of Cal State Northridge, Pacific and UC San Diego in the preseason coaches’ poll, which was announced Wednesday.

Only three points separated the poll’s top five teams with UC Irvine (100 points) and USC finishing in a tie for the top spot with three first-place votes apiece. Stanford took the third spot with 96 points overall and two first-place votes.

Pepperdine earned the fourth spot with 90 points and one first-place nod, while Brigham Young (85 points) took the fifth position with two first-place votes. The Cougars were followed by Hawaii (83 points) and UCLA (68 points), which also earned the remaining first-place vote.

UC Santa Barbara was picked to finish eighth with 58 points.

LBSU will open the season on Jan. 3 with an exhibition against Canada-based Alberta at the Walter Pyramid.
