Baseball: Dirtbags drop finale at Riverside

Long Beach State took an early 2-0 lead against UC Riverside, but four home runs by the Highlanders in the bottom of the third gave UCR a 6-2 lead on the way to a 7-5 win in the third game between the teams.

Jordan Casas led the Dirtbags (15-17, 4-5 Big West Conference) with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and two RBIs. Jonathan Jones also collected two RBIs on one hit.

Branden Pinder (3-4) was charged with the loss after tossing five innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits.

Matt Larkins (4-3) earned the win for UCR. Mitch Patito pitched two innings of relief for UC Riverside to earn his first save of the season.

LBSU will play one more game on the road, facing No. 1 UCLA on Tuesday before returning to Blair Field for a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Women’s Golf: LBSU in third place after first round

The 49ers completed day one of the Big West Conference Championship at the par-72, 6,168 San Luis Obispo Country Club with a 19-over 307 to finish in third place.

LBSU remains just nine strokes behind first place No. 31 UC Davis (298) and one stroke behind No. 40 UC Irvine (306). UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge are tied for fourth as both teams finished 10 shots behind the 49ers, followed by Cal Poly in sixth and Cal State Fullerton in seventh.

Individually for the 49ers, junior Reina Rogers was the top player for LBSU as she fired a 75 to finish in a four-way tie for third and remain just three shots behind Alice Kim of UCD as she sits on top of the leaderboard with a 72.

Freshman Simone Hoey and sophomore Noelle Zavaleta finished the day tied for seventh as both players carded a 77.

Sophomore Monica Villarreal recorded a 78 to tie for 13th as she started the round with a double-bogey, while junior Lindsey McAtee tied for 23rd with an 81.

Second round action continues on Monday morning beginning at 9 a.m. The 49ers are scheduled for a 10:20 a.m. start.

Softball: 49ers lose series finale at Davis despite allowing just two hits

Box score

Long Beach State left nine runners on base in a 2-1 loss to UC Davis in the series finale Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.

Taylor Petty (8-11) scattered just two hits and gave up three walks, while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings of work. Senior Bridgette Pagano also tossed 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

The Beach (20-20, 4-5 Big West) was led by junior Liz Javier, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Junior Christina Schallig also doubled, while Nalani St. Germain scored LBSU’s lone run.

The Aggies (16-24, 5-3 Big West) answered in the bottom half of the inning, pushing two runs across to take the lead for good.

With the bases loaded, Petty hit Sarah Axelson with a pitch to even the score at 1-1, before Kylie Fan drove in the game-winner with a fielder’s choice.

Alex Holmes earned the win for UC Davis and Dana Waldusky picked up her first save of the season.

LBSU returns to the 49er Softball Complex when it plays host to Cal Poly. The three-game series will get underway on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
