Men’s Golf: 49ers finish last tune-up before Big West Championships
The 49ers shot a final round score of 295 at the U.S. Intercollegiate to finish in 18th place at the par 70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Long Beach State completed the three-day 54-hole tournament at 50-over 890. No. 6 Oregon shot up from third place to capture the team championship with an 839 (one-under-par), followed by No. 33 San Diego State finishing three strokes behind with an 842 (two-over-par) and No. 3 Washington finishing in third with an 843 (three-over).
Tournament host No. 2 Stanford finished in seventh with an 853 (13-over).
Daniel Miernicki of Oregon claimed the individual title after he fired a tournament low of 64 in the final round to finish with a 202 (eight-under) to hold a three-stroke lead over Nick Taylor of Washington (205).
Individually, LBSU’s Benjamin Lein was the team’s top finisher as he carded a 74 in Tuesday’s final round to tie for 44th. The freshman posted scores of 75 and 70 in the first two rounds to finish at nine-over (219).
Sophomore Kevin Roy recorded his best round of the tournament with a 72 to finish with a 222 (12-over) to tie for 64th.
Senior Robbie Berton shot a 75 to finish at 17-over (227) to tie for 83rd, while classmate Michael Drake tied for 87th as he completed the final day with a 74 to close at 18-over (228).
Freshman Raymond Ho recorded a final round score of 78 to finish in 96th with a 234 (24-over).
The Beach will be off the next three weeks as it prepares for the Big West Conference Championship, May 3-4, at the Mission Viejo Country Club.
Baseball: Pinder collects Pitcher of the Week honor
Branden Pinder was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week on Monday after helping Long Beach State pick up a split during a doubleheader Saturday against UC Davis.
Pinder allowed three hits over a complete-game shutout to give LBSU its first shutout of the season. He didn’t allow a hit over the last five innings of the game, with only one runner reaching base as a hit batter.
The transfer from Santa Ana College is scheduled to next pitch this Sunday against UC Riverside.
Softball: Schallig tabbed Player of the Week
Junior Christina Schallig was named the Big West Softball Player of the Week after leading Long Beach State to a 2-1 series win at Cal State Northridge last weekend.
The Cal transfer clubbed two home runs and led The Beach with a .400 (4-for-10) batting average, four runs scored and four RBI. She reached base safely in all three games, finishing with a .500 on base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
The 49ers return to action April 17-18 when it heads north to UC Davis.
