Why you should Tweet rather than Facebook about politics

We have two more weeks until the election and just two more weeks until I can have a break from people posting about their political views on Facebook.

I get it. You still believe President Barack Obama is a liar according to a choppy ill-put-together YouTube video of spliced together clips of Obama saying, “I am a Muslim.” Did you happen to notice that with each spoken word of that sentence Obama was wearing a different tie? Idiot.

I am also tired of people posting about Gov. Mitt Romney’s “binders full of women” flub at the second presidential debate. It was great for a moment, but your attempt at making it a meme a week later is pretty unfunny.

I wish I could avoid my friend’s and family’s political views. I tend to like or be related to these people so the last thing I want to be – since I don’t see them in person as much – is  bothered by their political views.  That is why you should use Twitter for your political rants. You know why? Because I don’t follow you there. I use Twitter to follow people I don’t know personally but from whom I like reading what they have to say. Comedians, actors, writers – if I don’t want to hear from them anymore, there is no problem  in unfollowing them. Same can’t be said about defriending your drunk racist uncle. He is still family.

Twitter also limits users to 140 characters. That is all that is needed to get a good political point across – not massively long Facebook  threads of people arguing their ideas on some personal political ideal. Half the time, people are just repeating what others had said 15 comments ago.

Also, Twitter uses hashtags. I love hashtags. Hashtags are awesome. Hashtags can be funny if used right. Hashtags do not work with Facebook. Don’t use them there.

Lastly, for the people on Facebook who post something controversial and ask for no “comments please,” you are the worst. If you are going to be that person on Facebook who does this to me, you better be ready to defend yourself.

Follow my example: I’ll never Facebook about gun control again.
