This string of sickening child sexual abuse scandals has gone on long enough. From the Catholic Church, to Penn. State and now the massive perversion files released by the Boy Scouts of America, it is time for these disgusting cover-ups to end.
Last week, the release of 1,200 confidential files of suspected sexual abuse between the years of 1965 and 1985 made much of the public cringe. It was the realization that the nightmare of massive child sexual abuse cover-ups will still linger on.
The files were kept to keep track of the scoutmasters and other volunteers who were accused of alleged child sexual abuse. The files were meant to help bar these individuals from ever being involved with the Scouts again.
However, the files also revealed evidence that certain scoutmasters who confessed to the accusations were still allowed to return to the scouts only to molest again.
The perversion files exposed the Scouts for their years of covering-up for these sick individuals.
The scary thing is these files only reveal the Scout’s cover-ups from a span of 20 years. The 1,200 files do not include the many other incidents that may have gone on outside these years and the ones that were probably never reported.
The fact that the Scouts practically condoned this behavior by allowing repenting perpetrators back in and covering up their wrongdoings only condemns the Scouts’ actions even more.
In a sense, this is similar to Joe Paterno’s covering-up for Jerry Sandusky for all those years, only on a more massive scale.
So why do these horrific child abuse scandals keep happening?
There seem to be a few common themes that stem from each one of these cases.
First off, many of these situations have to do with organizations that give their employees access to children. As ill as it is to think, the Scouts are an ideal place for a pedophile to prey on innocent children.
Second, there is usually a reveal of years and years of coverups by the organization. If the Scouts had come forth earlier and taken responsibility by reporting the first, and every other case thereafter, of child sexual abuse occurring within the organization, the Scouts could have ridden themselves of the pedophiles who were allowed to stay and commit their crimes again and deter future predators from coming to the Scouts in the first place.
The more that is revealed about the secrets of the Scouts, the more parents will consider searching for a new place to send their children. It just does not seem safe anymore.
