Hopefully everyone on campus keeps track of the current events going on in the United States — or even more — the world. We’re a college campus full of young adults that will be shaping the future of our generation and generations after ours.
With much of our population possessing smart phones, at least one of the many applications we download should be some sort of news source. Fox News, Los Angeles Times, and ABC7 among other news sources have apps available for free download.
However, for those of you who stay loyal to one news source and avoid others, you are only receiving one side of the story. It is a well-known fact that news sources, especially when reporting back to their own country, tend to be a bit more skewed. It’s more effective to switch news sources from time to time in order to have a better-rounded idea of different issues going on in the U.S. or the world.
Other news sources, like BBC and Al Jazeera, have been receiving more recognition for their work in news.
In 2010, Al Jazeera was rewarded an Emmy award in the News Category for the International academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The British Broadcasting Corporation is the largest broadcasting organization in the world, with eight national channels, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations, plus regional programming, as stated on their website.
Al Jazeera and BBC both do a good job of reported world and even United States affairs. Of course, they’re not perfect, but they provide a pretty different view and take on issues going on the U.S. Perhaps reading a report from an outside source would give us a more clear idea of an overall issue than U.S. news sources do.
The thing is, U.S. news sources are more clouded with connotations. Let’s face it though; these people are more emotionally attached to the politics and matters of our nation as it will directly affect them as citizens in the end. It’s not to say that they’re unprofessional or lacking in expertise, it’s merely that these are citizens just as ingrained in U.S.-related turmoil as we are.
Al Jazeera English can be viewed on their website or on their YouTube channel. Al Jazeera also has also has an app for all types of phones, iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Samsung, you name it.
BBC also has a YouTube channel as well as programs available on basic cable. It also has an app available to download for iPhone and Android smart phones.
The importance of being up to date with issues going on around the world can’t be stressed enough. Exactly where you get your information from is secondary, yet still imperative. Most news apps are free, so if you don’t have one, we suggest you download one.
More importantly, though, don’t forget to follow the Union Weekly, Dig and, of course the Daily 49er, your university’s news outlets.
