Chris Chavez aims for presidency

With its excellent academic reputation and programs, Cal State Long Beach is a campus we can truly be proud of. However, the university’s best asset is you, its diverse students. I thank you for the opportunity to have served as senator, on various boards, councils and committees, as cabinet member and as your vice president. With years of experience, I’ve learned how student government works and how to make it work for you, the students of CSULB.

So, why should you vote for me? If elected, I will work hard to address student concerns and to develop and promote student-friendly policies. Our students face serious funding challenges caused by a financial crisis that is unprecedented in recent times. In addition, the cost of a college education continues to increase; therefore, the need for fi-nancial aid, fair student loans and improved student services is greater than ever.

Since my freshman year, I have worked to implement or affect policy that is fa-vorable to students. I fought for transparent textbook pricing, I’ve pushed to expand ac-cess to financial aid and I’ve actively supported AB 462, the College Affordability Act of 2009.

I’ve consulted with the university administrators about developing a direct lend-ing program as an alternative to predatory lenders. Education is an investment in you, not the bankers. However, only student leaders with vision and determination can help make it happen.

Some describe CSULB as a “commuter campus,” which is not accurate. ASI funds hundreds of student-organized events that greatly enrich campus life. I’ve worked with a number of student organizations and discovered their events make the university experience more enjoyable, stimulating and culturally diverse.

I strongly believe we must reward all student groups for their innovation and hard work. With increased support, our students are capable of even greater accomplishments. As ASI president, I promise to be a resource for these groups so we can work collabora-tively to improve campus life.

Leadership is not about blame and pointing fingers; it’s about having the vision and determination to develop student-friendly policies and solutions. ASI should address student concerns and enhance the student campus experience. I have the vision, experi-ence and determination to make student government work for you. It was a privilege to serve you in the past and it would be an honor to serve as your ASI president.
