Associated Students Inc. has finally confirmed a date for the first ever on campus farmers market.
The farmers market will be held next Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, according to Public Relations Commissioner for ASI Andrea Lomeli.
Plans for this farmers market have been in the works since September when members of the Senate brought up the idea at an ASI meeting. There has been a lot of red tape that ASI had to overcome to organize the event since then, ASI Chief Programming Officer Irving Barcenas said.
Agreement on a mutual date and insurance coverage for potential vendors were a couple of things that held up the finalization of the contract, according to Barcenas. ASI is working in collaboration with L.A. City Farms to bring this event to campus.
The farmers market will feature vendors with stands full of fresh fruit, produce, dried nuts as well as homemade jewelry and trinkets for students to choose from.
“We’ve been getting a really good response from students who hear about it, so I think it’s in high demand,” ASI Special Events Coordinator Chantal Stamp said.
Depending on the success of the initial event, the goal is to continue the farmers market into the fall and hold it on a monthly basis, according to Barcenas.
The event will be at no cost to students. Vendors are required to pay a site fee to ASI so the event will generate some revenue for ASI, Barcenas said.
